Privacy policy

Short version: we don't have accounts, we don't track you, and your location is only used when you ask for it.

Last updated: 4 September 2026

Who we are

NextBusTime is an independent website that shows bus times, routes and stops using open transport data. We are not a bus operator or a transport authority.

We don't have accounts

There is no sign-up, no login and no password. We don't ask for your name, email address or phone number to use the site.

Your location

Location is optional and is never requested automatically. Nothing on this site asks for your location until you tap "Use my location". When you do:

  • Your browser asks your permission first — you can decline.
  • Your approximate coordinates are sent to our server only to work out which bus stops are nearest to you.
  • We do not save your location in our database, and we do not link it to you or build a history of where you've been.
  • Your chosen location is remembered in your own browser for 12 hours (so you don't have to tap it on every page). It never leaves your device except as described above.

You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data, and you can revoke location permission in your browser settings. The whole site works without location — search by postcode, town, stop or route instead.

What we store in your browser

We use your browser's local storage (not cookies) for two things:

  • Your chosen location, as described above, for 12 hours.
  • Your saved favourite stops. These are stored only on your device — they are not sent to us, so they won't follow you to another device.

See our cookie policy for more detail.

Technical logs

Like almost every website, our hosting provider records basic technical information about requests (such as IP address, browser type and the page requested) for security and reliability. These logs are short-lived and are not used to profile you or build an advertising audience.

Third parties

Using this site involves a small number of third parties:

  • Map tiles — our maps load imagery from OpenStreetMap. When a map loads, your browser contacts them directly, so they will see your IP address.
  • Transport data sources — bus data comes from the Department for Transport's Bus Open Data Service and NaPTAN. We request this data from our own servers; your details are not passed on. See about the data.

Analytics and advertising

We do not currently run any analytics, advertising or third-party tracking scripts. If that changes, we will update this policy and the cookie policy first, and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Children

This site is a public transport information service suitable for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights over personal data we hold about you. Because we don't operate accounts or store your location or favourites on our servers, in practice we hold very little that identifies you. If you have a question or a request, email us at hello@nextbustime.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Changes to this policy

If we make meaningful changes we'll update the date at the top of this page.
