How to get from Durham to Newcastle by bus

Durham to Newcastle is one of the busiest bus corridors in the North East, and you have a few options depending on whether you want the cheapest, the fastest, or the last one home.

The 21 — the one you'll usually catch
The 21 is the backbone of this corridor. It runs between Newcastle and Brandon via Durham, Chester-le-Street and Plawsworth, so it picks up all the main stops along the way.
Because it stops more often, it's the slower option — but it's also the one that turns up most often, so unless you've timed your trip carefully it's usually faster to take the first 21 than to wait for an express.

The X21 — fewer stops
The X21 runs from West Auckland through to Newcastle. The "X" means express: it skips many of the smaller stops, so it's quicker end-to-end, but it runs less often and won't stop everywhere the 21 does.

The N21 — getting home late
The N21 is the night service between Durham and Newcastle. If you're out in Newcastle in the evening, this is usually the service to look for once the daytime buses have finished.
Night services run far less frequently than daytime ones, so check the times before you go out, not at 1am on Northumberland Street.

How long does it take?
Allow around an hour on the 21 for the full Durham–Newcastle run, and a bit less on the X21. Add more at peak times — the A167 and the approach into Newcastle get busy on weekday mornings and late afternoons.
